Art commissions

Looking for a family portrait or a personal one? Talk to Cordell.

There’s nothing like having a privately commissioned painting, something that is bespoke to you or the person you are gifting it to. When you commission a portrait, Cordell’s approach is to ensure that this is a truly enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Portrait commissions typically range from head and shoulders to half-length portraits, using both formal and informal poses. This will depend on the occasion and your personal preference.

Take a look below at the typical stages involved in painting a portrait. This will not only prepare you but also give you some idea of the work involved in producing a portrait commission in oils.

Stage 1

Cordell’s portrait process starts with an initial meeting to discuss the full painting process with you. This will include discussing your thoughts and ideas, including the type and size of the painting, timings and sitting, delivery of the painting and framing if necessary.

At this stage, Cordell will be able to inform you of the price, which will be dependent upon the size, number of sitters and the content involved.

Oil paintings require a drying period and can take months to complete so planning ahead is crucial, ideally at least 6 months in advance.

Stage 2

Sittings are arranged at a convenient time for you, and usually last around 1-2 hours, which can be at home or Cordell’s studio. During the sitting Cordell will make numerous sketches and take photographs to inform his drawing and painting.

He will then take his reference material back to his studio, where he will create the painting.

It is not often necessary for the sitter to sit again, although occasionally a short second sitting may be arranged.

Stage 3

An oil painting will take approximately 3 to 4 months to complete, including the period for the painting to dry and cure before a temporary varnish is applied. At this stage, framing can be discussed and ordered separately. Delivery or collection of the painting can be arranged.

Stage 4

Keeping everyone updated on the painting’s progress is an important part of the process. Cordell is happy for you to arrange a time to come and see the portrait painting in progress. Photographs of the painting’s stages can also be sent via email to keep everybody informed of progress.
